Fossil Coral (Lithostrotionella)

Official West Virginia State Gemstone

Lithostrotionella Coral is very similar to the Petoskey Stone Coral of Michigan. Our Lithostrotionella is from the Mississippian Period (350 million years) of West Virginia. It has excellent preservation and would be great for cutting for jewelry because it has lots of color and makes a nice specimen as is. Lithostrotionella is the official State Gem Stone of West Virginia. It is technically not a gemstone, but rather the silicified Mississippian fossil coral preserved as the siliceous mineral chalcedony. It is found in the Hillsdale Limestone in portions of Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties and is often cut and polished for jewelry and for display.

The photos at right show some polished pieces of this beautiful coral.

This item is sold by the pound and we will do our best to pick the best pieces for you. Most specimens are 1-10 pounds. PLEASE SPECIFY THE NUMBER OF POUNDS AT CHECK OUT.
