Coelophysis was a small, slenderly-built, ground-dwelling, bipedal carnivore, that could grow up to 3 meter (9.8 foot) long and weighed about 20 kilograms (44 pounds). It is one of the earliest known dinosaurs. It had a furcula (wishbone), the earliest known example in a dinosaur.

It is one of the best known dinosaurs due to the excavation of dozens of skeletons from New Mexico. The remains of the last meal can be seen within the ribcage of this specimen. Coelophysis was first described by Cope in 1889.
